Party Hangover and a List

What a weekend.  We had a small family party for Nate’s 2nd – it was a bit last minute in the planning, but in the end worked out just fine. The general theme of construction / trucks worked out well. A few photos!

I got to play a bit in photoshop which was fun, and then of course I was scouring pinterest for ideas too.  I picked up a bunch of little toy trucks that Nate is already quite taken with, and even pulled out Jackson’s Halloween costume for part of the decorations! When I saw this post about the caution tape on the inside cake I knew I had to try it.  I have to say, having a construction theme works so well for the cake, because if it turns out to be a bit wonky, who cares? It adds character 🙂 It worked out pretty well even though I used boxed mix and store frosting and I’m pleased.  I think Nate had a good time, that’s all that matters. Oh yes, the guests had fun too.  And to top off the day (or start the next one) we got the news that my brother and SIL had their baby, and we’re looking forward to meeting her this week.  That also means I will finally get to share some secret projects this week! Sunday was very much a down day for us – I think we all have party hangover.

Now for the list: 10 Favorite Meals

1. Dessert. I mean really. When I was a kid we had a sign up in the kitchen that said “Life is Uncertain, Eat Dessert First!”. Truth.  I especially love dessert for breakfast (apple crisp, brownies, cake – which we have this week, as we only ended up cutting up one of the cakes.)

2. Breakfast: Bacon and eggs, egg sandwiches (especially good for dinner!), pancakes or french toast.

3. Seafood Risotto – there’s a local restaurant that makes a delicious version

4. “Chowdah” (RI-style) & Clam Cakes

5. Thanksgiving Dinner: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy

6. Lobster Rolls – simple style: lobster + butter + slightly toasted hot dog bun

7. Fish Tacos and Margaritas from the local Mexican place

8. Good pizza topped with lots of meat.

9. Spaghetti and my homemade meatballs (I use Mark Bittman’s recipe)

10. Any delicious meal that I didn’t have to plan for, cook or clean up after!

A bit of ridiculous

I have to say that I was pretty excited for this Monday Listicle prompt, “10 Ridiculous Things I saw Online” – perfect for looking back over Pinterest. It seems I have liked a lot of ridiculous things.  These made me giggle and snort and that’s not too bad of a way to start the week.

1.

I would not be surprised if my family thinks this is what I will be like when I’m older.

2.

I love this saying, but dude. Julia Child said it, not Julia Childs. And this is for sale on etsy.

3.

Cute idea for pool noodles supposedly. Who has time to make those cuts so flush and notches just right? Someone without kids.

4.

Oh heaven help the bald babies. Though I am tempted to see if I can do this, just to see.

5.

Yes, save the Tree Octopus!

6.

It’s possible my 5yr old would love these unicorn poop cookies.

7.

So tempting for my dachshund.

8.

Any Nail Art I’ve seen on pinterest.

9.

Giraffe sweaters.  (And pretty much any other animal in a sweater, though it is a fine line to ridiculously awesome!).

10. You said it Abe!

Impractical.

This was a tricky listicle to come up with, in my opinion.  Impractical things – huh. I know them when I see them.  And then I started to take a look around.

1. My Ravelry Queue. 36 pages, 1054 items.  You’ve heard of S.A.B.L.E (Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy) I think I may have a case of Q.I.B.L.E (Queued Items Beyond Life Expectancy), but it still won’t get you points in Words with Friends!

2. Me in heels. I was always one of the taller gals, used to standing in the back for photos. I never think of my height until I see a photo of me standing with my friends (they may or may not be in heels) and I am almost a whole head taller. Also, I have never been one who has been drawn to a pair of heels. Flats, sure (I pinned and then went out and bought polka-dot converse!), but heels? Meh. Although these caught my eye:

3. White clothing / sheets / towels / onesies. I may have an irrational feeling that white is just a magnet for something to be spilled on it.

4. Try to folding fitted sheets.  Also, why bother?

5. Picking up after the kids. Seriously, Nate’s most favorite thing to do is to dump out the box of people to play in the castle. Or food stuff for the kitchen.

6. Candy crush.  Stupid game.  Level 165 was seeming pretty impractical for about the last month or so.  Now level 167 is keeping me awake.

7. No coffee in the mornings.  Let’s just not. It’s not good for anyone.

8. Right now my Beekeeper Quilt feels pretty impractical.  I don’t think I’ve made any hexiflats since the summer Olympics (my Modular Relay project).  And yet, I’m still drawn to that sort of project.

9. Trying to buy kids shoes without them there. If you do, it just means another trip to the store to return and exchange.

10. Getting the dog to stop barking.  The windows are open as the humidity has finally gone away – so, you know, the rabbits are farting in his general direction.

I know this quote references the impossible not the impractical, but I couldn’t keep it out of my head when I was trying to write this post!

Monday Listicle: Life with Kids

I haven’t done a listicle in a while, but I could not resist the prompt for today. When I started blogging I think most of the posts featured Jackson, my first “kid”, in some way or another. It still happens now that I might meet someone who reads this blog and they know Jackson! Then the lorax and the little nutmeg arrived, and they have dominated the blog among the knitting for a while.  Lately it has gotten harder to get decent photos – someone is always moving or, moving to see how the photo came out! Instagram is great for sharing a lot of these quick snaps, so many on my listicle come from there. All were taken with my phone.  I really need to charge up my big camera and just get back to it. Anyway, here’s today’s listicle:

Monday Listicle

I forget now how I discovered the Monday Listicle, but I think it’s a fun idea.  I love lists.  To do’s, Won’t Dos, Maybe Dos, Mix Tapes, etc.  Maybe a good jump start for the week, which is sure to be a busy one. Cheers to the start of June!

10 THINGS I FIRST NOTICE ABOUT SOMEONE

  1. Eyes
  2. Smile (or lack thereof)
  3. Hair
  4. Shoes – with socks, hopefully. I can’t stand shoes and no socks (ick, so sweaty! Wear flip flops then!)
  5. Are they wearing a watch?
  6. Accessories – jewelry or tattoos
  7. What are they doing?
  8. How they react towards me.
  9. How they react towards my children.
  10. The general vibe I get from them – I’m usually trusting of most, but a few wrong encounters with the crazy and creepy have left my guard up a bit more.
