I spotted this meme on two blogs and I just couldn’t resist. Plus my brain is sort of in a fog and funk right now and this seemed like a good idea at the time.
1. Favorite childhood book?
Is it possible to pick one? I was a huge fan of the whole “Little House” series, Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew, just about anything by Judy Blume, Bunnicula, Ramona & Beezus, Roll of Thunder Hear my cry, and Agatha Christie mysteries

2. What are you reading right now?
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest

3. What books do you have on request at the library?
I think I have a few knitting / crochet books on request that I wanted to see.

4. Bad book habit?
I’ve gotten better with my books but as a kid, I would crack spines and dog ear the pages.

5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
A pile of books for the Lorax: Ladybug Girl at the Beach, Hug Time, Is There Really a Human Race?, Muncha Muncha Muncha, Where are You Blue Kangaroo, No More Kissing, Wiggle, and one for me: Sweater Design in Plain English

6. Do you have an e-reader?
I have a Kindle2

7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
While I might have ADHD with my knitting, I like to enjoy one book at a time.

8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
Not really, as the blog was started for knitting. I have occasionally reviewed books on the blog though.

9. Least favorite book you read this year (so far?)
I have gotten rather sick and tired of a few of the Lorax’s books, and I didn’t love the last Twilight book.

10. Favorite book you’ve read this year?
I really loved The Art of Racing in the Rain. And Eat, Pray, Love.

17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
Not so much

18. Not even with text books?

19. What is your favorite language to read in?

20. What makes you love a book?
Good story, good quotes, something that makes me think from a different point of view or interesting concepts where I can learn something new.

I really enjoyed Eat, Pray, Love.

28. Favorite reading snack?
Mike & Ikes / Jellybeans

Harry Potter? I’ve seen the movies and while I’m sure the books are better, I have no interest to read them (maybe when the Lorax is old enough we can read them together)

30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?
I don’t read too many book reviews, I don’t care what the critics say.

31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
I’m honest – if I didn’t like what I read, why would I say otherwise?

32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?

33. Most intimidating book you’ve ever read?
I have never thought of a book as intimidating, though in high school Shakespeare was probably just that. By the time I got to college and had to read it, something “clicked” and it was fine.

45. Most disappointing film adaptation?
I’m not sure… so many times, the book was better.

46. The most money I’ve ever spent in the bookstore at one time?
Buying college textbooks easily ran up a few hundred dollars. Non college stuff could also be $100 or so buying gifts.

There is a mild organization going on in my shelves now, but it’s quite fluid.

50. Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you’ve read them?

The last twilight book

54. A book that you expected to like but didn’t?
Best Friends Forever (Jennifer Weiner)

55. Favorite guilt-free, pleasure reading?
Knitting books? Cookbooks? Isn’t it supposed to be guilty pleasures?

Gosh, it seems like a long time since I did one of these. And since it has caught my eye on several other blogs I figure I would play along too.

1. What’s your staple meal (ie. what meal do you cook most often when you can’t be bothered to be adventurous)? I think that would have to be spaghetti and meatballs. It’s done quickly, satisfies, and is relatively hard to screw up.

2. What do you want to be when you grow up? My dad has been asking me what my career plan is since I was 6 years old. Frequently. Lucky for me, he supported me in pretty much whatever answer I gave. I wanted to be a photographer for Life magazine and National Geographic. I’ve loved science for a very long time (I’ve got a chemistry background and am trying to return to those roots). I thought about being a teacher (and I did that). I wanted to be a mom (doing that now). I love that I’m building my knitting resume even though it’s not a viable full-time gig, yet. I want to do something challenging and interesting.

3. What book are you reading at the moment (if any) I’ve just started reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on the kindle. It’s slow going, only because I tend to knit during times I would be reading.

4. How do you relax? I love to sit on the beach and feel the breeze and hear the waves. That doesn’t happen too often, so I knit (duh), and I play with the Lorax at her kiddie pool or push her on the swingset.

5. What color are the interior walls of your home? Depends on the room – white, mauve-ish, pale pink, light apple green, tiffany blue, smoky purple, dapple grey and a stripe of dark apple green are found on the walls.

6. What is your guiltiest pleasure? High fructose corn syrup in candy – jelly beans, mike & ikes, gummy worms… As much as I try to resist the genentically modified food and over developed chickens and un-fair trade coffees and HFCS, I cannot resist a handful of wonka candy. That and the train wreck reality tv shows – Real Housewives, Wife Swap, Toddlers / Tiaras, Little Miss Perfect.

7. What time is bedtime and getting up time? I usually get up and go to bed around hubby’s bedtime / wake up since he’s the one to go out into the work world. That works out to be about 6:30am to get up and 10-ish p.m for bed. The Lorax is usually up by 6:45 or earlier, but is content to read in her room – she’s up and out by 7. It’s an early day, but I can no longer really sleep in like I did back in college. Now, sleeping in means waking up without an alarm clock – so, 7:15 – 7:30.

8. How long do you spend reading blogs (per day or per week)? At least 1 hour a day I think… maybe more since I can get them on my iphone… There are so many interesting things to read! I can’t get enough!

Around the House Meme

PeacefulKnitter posted an “Around the House” photo meme on her blog and I’ve decided to play along, as my knitting right now is not ready for prime time as they say.

So, I’ll show you mine if you show me yours…just copy the list, take a stroll through your house one day, and post on your blog. Because we all like to see how other people live, right?!

Here are the categories for the Around the House meme:

* In the kitchen
* On the nightstand
* In your work/craft space
* Out the window
* What the pets or children are up to
* On your feet
* Knitting or knitwear in action

(My photos come from the iphone over the course of the New Year Weekend)

2008 Review

(Don’t forget to check out my contest)

Where did you begin 2008?
At home, with family.

What was your status by Valentine’s Day?

Were you in school (anytime this year)?
Not at all. Still can’t believe it has gone by so fast.

Did you have to go to the hospital?
Luckily, not this year.

Did you have any encounters with the police?
Two – once for a traffic violation (went through a red light. it was coming home from Rhinebeck. 20 minutes from home. I didn’t see it until I was under it and made a poor choice.) once for the house alarm going off (turned out to be nothing, but I wanted someone else there just in case.)

Where did you go on vacation?
Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands – can’t wait to go back! I also took a quick trip to DC in June and that was fun too.

What did you purchase that was over $500?
I can’t think of a purchase that was over $500… I probably spent several times that much on diapers (sadly. I still want to try the g-diapers.)

Any new additions to your family?

I always have ideas I want to put forth to make change. They are pretty standard. (My resolutions will be a separate post.)

Not this year. I haven’t been out to a mountain for skiing / snowboarding in years – I miss it (skiing that is, I hated snowboarding.)

Drank Starbucks in 2008?
Yes, thanks to listening to Lime & Violet, then going to SnB at Starbucks. I know a few of the baristas at the one in town by their names and they are fantastic!

Are you happy to see 2008 go?
I’m always happy for the new year, it feels like a fresh start. I am hopeful that 2009 will have more positives than negatives, but on the whole 2008 was not a bad year. The only way out is through, so here we go again!

About Mememememe

I’m behind on taking photos of my knits, and don’t have much to show for them anyway right now – maybe this weekend. Last night I did get out to the SnB and felt so charged up when I got home – silly I know, but to spend ~ 2 hours with other knitters is a rush 🙂 And I got to see people from the Monday afternoon group I used to go to (Sonia, Nancy) and I got to meet some people I only know from online / ravelry (Kelly, Jenn) – so cool! My family is very supportive of my knitting, but it’s just not the same. I was telling some people about local gourmet cookies – find them here: Red Rooster Baking.

Peaceful Knitter tagged me – so, stuff about me will have to do until my next post….

The rules: Each player answers the questions about themselves. At the end of the post, the player then tags 5-6 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

1) What was I doing ten years ago?
Let’s see, May 1998 – I finished my sophmore year of college…I was probably already back at work at The Paper Trail. I wasn’t knitting! Dan & I were together at that point (a little more than 2 years).

2) What are five (non-work) things on my to-do list for today:
Go to the farmer’s market.
Take the kids (Jackson & Lorelai) for a walk.
Pick up photo prints.
Locate my copy of the Bobbi Bear pattern (I am challenging myself to finish it for next week – all he needs are ears and some embroidery…)
Seam up the project I’m test knitting.

3) Snacks I enjoy:
Jelly beans, mike & ikes, air heads, (I’ve got a sugar addiction, I’m trying to detach myself from high fructose corn syrup….) fresh fruit – I can not wait for the berries to come back in season – we’re almost there!

4) Things I would do if I were a billionaire:
Go back to school – for what? photography & languages
Purchase shares in a local CSA
Make sure Lorelai has a trust of some sort set for college / grad school (if she wishes) / car / travel
Buy & Live at the beach (Rhode Island beaches!)

5) Places I have lived:
Born in Rhode Island, lived in New Jersey for a few years, moved to Connecticut, went to college in Rhode Island and spent 10 weeks in North Dakota, and went to graduate school in Syracuse, NY. ND and NY were ok, but I’m a New Englander at my core and here is where I plan to stay!

6) Jobs I have had:
paid: babysitter, retail sales, 1-hour photo developer, lab assistant, teaching assistant, middle school science teacher, mom, sister, daughter
volunteering: hospital escort, beach monitor for bird nests, Big Sisters, local women & family support center

7) Peeps I want to know more about:
