The Quiet Busy

This weekend was all together too short and too long. We had one designated, planned thing on each day, (each in town and under 2 hours) but by Sunday night we both thought this weekend was too busy.  As the holiday season rolls in and we’re looking forward to a fundraising event for family, Thanksgiving, L’s 6th birthday, a baptism, a wedding, Christmas, I don’t see how the weekends could possibly be anything but busy.  Anyway, this weekend involved:

  • Swim lessons
  • A less-than-enjoyable dinner out (a toddler in a bad mood doesn’t make a good dinner mate)
  • A birthday party
  • Daylight Savings time – we “fall” back and “gain” an hour, but it just throws the kids off. I could be on board with this!
  • Chores: all the laundry, vacuuming, and picking up

I think my 30 day sweater is officially going in to hibernation. I would rather work on other things and I have gifts to start. I wound up yarn for a pair of socks for Dan, and a hat for me. Then I couldn’t stop knitting on the hat! I finished it too, but it’s too tall so I have to rip back. I’m ok with that and look forward to sharing it on Friday! Along with this other hat that I’ll share a peek at today, because it’s just a cute picture.

Done Dinosaur

Dino

Way back in April I agreed to knit a Terence the Tap Dancing T-rex as part of an swap on Ravelry. Thankfully, the intended recipient is very patient with me. This dinosaur is ready to head off to a new home! His body (including tail and arms) were made with one skein of Ella Rae Worsted, the striped tummy panel are Cascade 220 Superwash. Nate spotted him as I was trying to take photos and promptly ran off with him! Looks like I will be making another in the near future. I’m a bit curious about working this pattern again with a super bulky yarn – there have been several of Rebecca Danger’s monsters made at my SnB lately with larger yarns and they are just incredible! Check out the blog roundup over at Tami’s to see what others have are up to!

Party Hangover and a List

What a weekend.  We had a small family party for Nate’s 2nd – it was a bit last minute in the planning, but in the end worked out just fine. The general theme of construction / trucks worked out well. A few photos!

I got to play a bit in photoshop which was fun, and then of course I was scouring pinterest for ideas too.  I picked up a bunch of little toy trucks that Nate is already quite taken with, and even pulled out Jackson’s Halloween costume for part of the decorations! When I saw this post about the caution tape on the inside cake I knew I had to try it.  I have to say, having a construction theme works so well for the cake, because if it turns out to be a bit wonky, who cares? It adds character 🙂 It worked out pretty well even though I used boxed mix and store frosting and I’m pleased.  I think Nate had a good time, that’s all that matters. Oh yes, the guests had fun too.  And to top off the day (or start the next one) we got the news that my brother and SIL had their baby, and we’re looking forward to meeting her this week.  That also means I will finally get to share some secret projects this week! Sunday was very much a down day for us – I think we all have party hangover.

Now for the list: 10 Favorite Meals

1. Dessert. I mean really. When I was a kid we had a sign up in the kitchen that said “Life is Uncertain, Eat Dessert First!”. Truth.  I especially love dessert for breakfast (apple crisp, brownies, cake – which we have this week, as we only ended up cutting up one of the cakes.)

2. Breakfast: Bacon and eggs, egg sandwiches (especially good for dinner!), pancakes or french toast.

3. Seafood Risotto – there’s a local restaurant that makes a delicious version

4. “Chowdah” (RI-style) & Clam Cakes

5. Thanksgiving Dinner: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy

6. Lobster Rolls – simple style: lobster + butter + slightly toasted hot dog bun

7. Fish Tacos and Margaritas from the local Mexican place

8. Good pizza topped with lots of meat.

9. Spaghetti and my homemade meatballs (I use Mark Bittman’s recipe)

10. Any delicious meal that I didn’t have to plan for, cook or clean up after!

Socks and a Birthday

Sock set Socks forward

This may be the turning of the tide! I finished the socks for the Lorax this week. I held back from outright giving them to her mostly out of fear that she would balk at the idea, so I just left them on the table.  She found them and brought them over to me, “Here Mom, you forgot your socks!” I told her they aren’t mine, they are too small, they probably would fit her.  She sat right down and put them on right away. Then ran around the house and tested out how slippery they are on the floors. Score! They fit, they look cute, and she can put them on, and she seemed to like them. Now the test will be if she actually wears them. She did put them away in her sock drawer (“for winter” as she told her dad last night).

And this kid, my baby, is now 2!! Amazing. He’s my baby but changing so fast – he’s quite verbal and such a boy and so similar and so different from his sister.  A parenting email I got this week that discusses developmental stages and ages topics started with this, “Your Preschooler: 2 years old!” Wait, what? When did being 2 make you a preschooler? I thought I had a toddler for a bit longer.  He is headed off to a “school” program for 2 year olds in a few weeks, but c’mon – we all know it’s just in the middle of daycare and preschool. We’re doing a small family party this weekend – general trucks / construction trucks theme.  Should be a good time!

Random 5 Friday

I don’t have any FO’s to share, but wanted to blog something, so I went looking for ideas and found Random 5 Friday. That works!
photo.JPG1.  “Yunchtime, mommy?” asks this kiddo.  Everyday when we get home after dropping his sister off at camp.  9:15am, looking for “Yunch” after eating a decent breakfast.  Maybe it’s a growth spurt?

2. I love how there are mini versions of candies lately – especially the mini reeses peanut butter cups (no wrappers!). I found mini Starbursts last night – but why do they only come in pinks, orange and yellow? No red or green? Interesting.

3. Friends of mine alerted me to a candy change. In Skittles, the green was lime and it was good.  The new green is Green Apple, which has an odd aftertaste.  I did a side by side taste test, because skittles is not my usual go-to candy, but I should know these things.

4. I have a new project bag from Piddeloop and I am trying to decide what will be the first project for it to hold.

5. I’m absolutely loving the weather yesterday and today.  I don’t care that it’s raining and grey.  Yesterday it was like I went to sleep in summer and woke up in fall – cool, breezy. Last night i slept under the covers! Crazy.  I’m sure it will heat up again but it is so nice to not have the A/C on!
